In Rutigliano
Church of Santa Maria della Colonna and San Nicola
The Matrice Church of Rutigliano, built in Romanesque style, dates back to the 10th century. Preserves valuable artistic evidence such as the Romanesque bell tower, the baroque dome and a portal whose architrave shows an eleventh-century bas-relief depicting Christ among the apostles. In the interior with three naves it is possible to admire some perimeter frescoes and a very precious wooden polyptych by Antonio Vivarini from the late 15th century.
Museum of the “Fischietto”
The museum of the “Fischietto” welcomes the Fischietti made in terracotta, the handcrafted products of the Rutlianese tradition made of terracotta and hand-painted paintings with vivid colors, linked as is known to the famous fair and the national competition, held on the feast of the Sant ‘festivities Antonio Abate.
Norman Tower
The Norman Tower, 34 meters high and located in the Castello courtyard at the entrance to the ancient village, dominates the Rutigliano landscape from the 11th century. This is what remains of an ancient castle of Byzantine-Norman origin, destroyed in 1618. The tower, with a quadrangular base with walls about two meters thick and narrow loopholes, has several floors superimposed up to a terrace at the top and conserves, inside, 15th century frescoes.
Palazzo Antonelli
Palazzo Antonelli is a valuable historic mansion dating back to the sixteenth century that has always belonged to the same family for more than five centuries: the Counts Antonelli. In the palace, an example of Renaissance architecture, you can admire the masonry of the entrance door, the terracotta floor, the kitchens, the wooden altar at the entrance of the main floor, the walls painted with lime and the vaults of beams, the wooden fixtures and the painted doors, just as they were in the seventeenth century.
Church of the Annunziata
On a small hill along the San Giorgio Lama, between the remains of an important Neolithic village and the natural beauties of the Mediterranean scrub, stands the rural church of the Annunziata. The church was probably built between the twelfth and fourteenth century with the aim of giving hospitality to pilgrims. Every year, on Easter Monday, it becomes a meeting point for the traditional and folk rite of the “Passa Passa”.
